Rankin leg irons


These Rankin leg irons are very rare. 1866 patent date. The design for the handcuffs was changed to include a gap to grasp the shackle and yank it open, as these are known to require a bit of force to open even once unlocked, due to spring tension. 

This looks like a really nice set of shackles with a fairly short twist link chain. 

They were marked A Rankin Phila and Pat Dec 10th 186, (presumably 1866). 

These sold for $701 in early January, 2025 after 19 bids. They came with an old alloy Hiatt key that apparently works? I don't know, I'd be worried about stripping the lock out.
