Bean Cobb leg irons
This is a nice nickel plated Bean Cobb leg iron that sold for $300. It had 1 original key, and near perfect plating according to the seller.
Here you can see a close-up for those not familiar with the Bean Cobb models. These are the H&R version, based on the straight link chain. Bean Cobb leg irons were made with a very nice, tight twist link chain. Other than that, the two makers used the same pattern for the cuffs, which is the same as the Bean Cobb handcuffs other than size/shape of course.
These are nice, lightweight leg irons. They don't double lock, but are quite oversized, and sit "comfortably" around the ankles. The chain is about 12".
This button is the arming/activating button. When the cuffs are unlocked, the key can be turned a little further to lock the pawls out of place. I described this arming action on a previous Bean Prison/Patrolman post. The button is only on one side of each cuff, while the keyway is accessible from either side.
These cuffs were designed to be serviceable. When unlocked, a screw on the side can be taken out and the lock case removed. I have done this with a Bean Cobb handcuff, and detailed the process on a post on the handcuffs forum on Tapatalk.
In fact here is another pair of Bean Cobb leg irons (true Bean Cobb, are the twist link chain) that was sold late December 2025 for $154.25 after 14 bids. This set is actually MISSING the lock case. I am surprised it sold for a decent price, as I have seen working models sell in the $120-$200 range. The shackles themselves aren't even in prime condition. Maybe someone has a damaged pair with workable locks and wants to swap them out?
I have 3 Bean Cobb leg irons. The first is "true" Bean Cobb, with very worn out nickel plating which I got for $160 with one key in 2019. A second pair from H&R which was plain steel and has a real nice dark muted patina, which I paid $147.56 for in 2020, and then finally, only a few months ago I got lucky and came across this MINT nickel plated Bean Cobb being sold for $30 buy it now.
Near mint, if not actually mint. Crisp locks, no wear on the clevises. Possibly unused. What a deal.

The Bean Cobb leg irons have a very nice chain. The sound is not as musical as some other chains, but it's a nice sound. I can only describe it as a "nut hatch" sound. Sort of like a tinkling sound if the tinkling thing was solid steel and didn't really tinkle.
