Harvard Lock Company Leg Irons

Here is a new old stock pair of ratcheting swing through leg irons from the Harvard Lock Company. These are only somewhat uncommon, and often show up in NOS condition like this with original keys and box and paper wrapping. The black finish is typical, although they also were produced in either a nickel plating or polished, I'm not sure as that variant is more uncommon.

This pair sold for $20.50 after 3 bids with the original keys and box.

Above, detail of the box with US Navy stamp. These were the preferred restraints for the US Navy at the time.

These handcuffs and leg irons have a double lock mechanism which is operated via the key in the keyhole. The key itself is VERY similar to a modern handcuff key but it has a *slightly* taller bit, or key flag. Due to this, a standard handcuff key can enter the keyway and 'slip' BEHIND the double lock lever and become stuck in the key hole. This is to be avoided, as it is difficult to remove the key and possible to break it off inside. Naturally I tried this once to see, and yes it is in fact true. I got the key out with some combination of force and patience.

These have a matte black finish and a wide range of adjustment. Overall a nice set of restraints.
