DDR VOPO East German shackles

This is a fairly rare restraint from the East German Volkspolizei during the GDR (also known as the DDR) during the mid 1900s made by state run industry.

This pair comes with one original key and is being auctioned on eBay.

Currently at $300 with 5 bids.

UPDATE: These SOLD for $438 after 8 bids. Nice to see the price reflect the rarity here. This is the first set I've seen since I got my pair.

Above, close up detail of the dual ratchet pawls. One is for single lock and the other is for double lock which is activated via the key in the keyhole.

These cuffs are made of lightweight cast aluminum alloy with steel internals.

Above, this is my own pair of the VOPO East German shackles. They originally had the same rubber coated steel cable, but I have a bad habit of attempting to escape from my restraints, and I had to know if it was possible to break the cable by twisting it excessively, as there was no swivel used. It turns out that a couple minutes of twisting was enough to separate the cable and I was free. Obviously this restraint would be better suited for transportation or restraint while under observation; if the prisoner is unsupervised thr cable can be easily broken.

I then replaced the cable with a heavy steel chain with large O rings and a heavy central swivel. No more escape for whoever's locked in these next. The design of the chain attachment made this fairly simple. I felt somewhat bad about destroying a rare restraint but now it's customized, more secure, unique and I think it looks good.

I got my pair for $350 a year or so ago with one original key. The matching hinged handcuffs share the same key.
