Bean Prison, Iver Johnson handcuffs

Here is a nice pair of Bean Prison Handcuffs. The seller states this is confirmed by weight as compared to the lighter but otherwise similar Patrolman model.

This pair sold for $180 with 1 non original key. The seller states that the bows are slightly misaligned, requiring assistance opening when fully closed. The lock activating buttons work as intended.

Below, a very similar pair, this one from Iver Johnson. Iver was an inventor and gunsmith involved in the firearms industry as well as transportation. He founded the Iver Johnson Arms & Cycleworks, where he produced bicycles, motorcycles, and more. He formed a manufacturing agreement with Edward Bean, who often licensed out his designs to manufacturers, in order to produce these based on the Patent Bean had registered, (#268,171) but Iver also made enough changes to the design that he applied for his own patent, (#308,075).

This pair SOLD for $261 after 8 bids. The nickel plating is worn but these are in working condition.

Above, close up detail of the locking notches. These cuffs require a two bitted key, as there are two locking "pawls" that engage these angled holes. Note the central rail that engages with the lock case; similar designs are still used today for high security multi pawl swing through ratcheting handcuffs.
